Fresh & New This Week:

A lovely variety of MIXED COLOR PEPPERS will be arriving from Green Meadow Farm this week.

Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op will be providing a delightful variety of produce, including CHERRY TOMATOES, CHEDDAR CAULIFLOWER, and large fluffy heads of ENDIVE. The bounty will also include a wide variety of squash, including RED KABOCHA SQUASH, GOLD HUBBARD SQUASH, SWEET LIGHTNING SQUASH, and huge GUATEMALAN BLUE BANANA SQUASH (picture an earthy grey Flinstones-type club, but its edible!). On Friday, LFFC is bringing us some more BROCCOLI RABE and RADICCHIO.

Sadly, we will not be getting any more HONEY CRISP APPLES, but PINK LADY APPLES from Kauffman's Fruit Farm have swooped in to save the day! These lovely sweet-tart apples are a customer favorite.

This week, Paradise Organics will bring ROMANESCO CAULIFLOWER. This crazy-looking veggie tastes just like a regular cauliflower, but has pointed florets.

Otterbein Acres restocked our cheese supply with their raw milk sheeps cheese, SHEPHERD'S DELIGHT.

Finally, Overbrook Herb Farm will bring more APPLE & CHERRY WOOD for smoking along with a nice selection of HERBS on Thursday.

Green Restaurant Expo: Sustainable Supply Chain Seminar
When: November 30th
Where: Feast Your Eyes Catering, Front and Palmer Streets
Time: 2:30 PM-6 PM
This event will provide education on how to ease your restaurant into buying local and "green." A keynote and panel discussion, including our executive director, Ann Karlen, will discuss the ins and outs of working toward a more sustainable business model. There will also be an opportunity to network and check out other vendor tables with sustainable solutions. The seminar is $15 for SBN members and $20 for non-members. Broccoli-Cheese Chowder

This would be great using the romanesco broccoli, saving some of the florets whole, to garnish the chowder with.

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 large carrot, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 large potato, peeled and diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
28 ounce vegetable broth, or chicken broth
12 ounces broccoli crowns, (see Ingredient Note), cut into 1-inch pieces, stems and florets separated
1 cup shredded Raw Milk Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1/8 teaspoon salt

  PREPARATION

   1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot and celery; cook, stirring often, until the onion and celery soften, 5 to 6 minutes. Add potato and garlic; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in flour, dry mustard and cayenne; cook, stirring often, for 2 minutes.

   2. Add broth and broccoli stems; bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to medium. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Stir in florets; simmer, covered, until the broccoli is tender, about 10 minutes more. Transfer 2 cups of the chowder to a bowl and mash; return to the pan.

   3. Stir in Cheddar and sour cream; cook over medium heat, stirring, until the cheese is melted and the chowder is heated through, about 2 minutes. Season with salt.
