Lots of new goodies from Green Meadow Farm: BABY RED BOK CHOI, YOUNG PEA SHOOTS, MESCLUN MIX, BROCCOLI FLORETS, MIXED BRASSICA LEAF BUNCHES (like Brussels Sprouts!) for sautéing, WATERMELON RADISHES, SORREL and GARLIC CHIVES. Also from Green Meadow Farm, BLACK WALNUT and HICKORY NUTS, out of the shell. The Hickory is a cousin of the Pecan, and is basically a hearty version. It was widely planted in this area centuries ago by European settlers, but unfortunately, not many of the Hickory orchards survive today. Its flavor is that of an extremely rich Pecan. Last but not least – FRUIT and NUT WOODCHIPS for smoking; raspberry, fig and maple. Now I know it's not really outdoor cooking weather per se, but it's fine weather for smoking. I have smoked my Christmas bird many times. Overbrook Herb Farm brings us RED-SKINNED TURNIPS, BABY LEEKS (almost scallion-sized), TEVISO RADICCHIO, and CILANTRO. From the hydroponics greenhouse of Woodland Produce, we'll have 'TOM THUMB' lettuce heads, SPICY SPRING MIX (a mix of lettuces, Arugula and some spicier greens), PEA SHOOTS, and more herbs: SAGE, BASIL, MINT and THYME, in recipe-sized packets. Oley Valley Mushroom will be adding some lovely BABY SHITAKES to their offerings that you can add, stem and all, to your dishes. Angie says just snip off the bottom tip and you're good to go. More Certified Organic variety from Lancaster Farm Fresh, including BABY CHIOGGIA (striped) BEETS, INDIGO RADICCHIO and ENDIVE. How was your Thanksgiving? Now our state Secretary of Agriculture has decided to 'protect us' as consumers in Pennsylvania by banning that kind of information on dairy product labels, claiming it's 'confusing' and 'misleading.' They say there is no way to test for the bovine growth hormone, but many dairies are already monitoring farms through field visits. Even big dairies such as Wawa have signs up in their stores proclaiming their milk is rBST/rBGH free. The Secretary also says that it's not fair to farmers who do use these artificial enhancers, because they're being essentially discriminated against. This seems counter-intuitive to me… Isn't that the way the market's supposed to work? This is not just a Pennsylvania issue, either; we're just being used as a jumping off point. Ohio and New Jersey are considering similar bans, and any dairy company outside of PA who sells in PA will have to follow our labeling guidelines. I've already received emails from as far away as Oregon concerning this issue. It's troubling that a regulation with such sweeping impact is all set to go into effect as of January 1, 2008. Even though this is a busy time of year, but we can still oppose it and (hopefully) it's not a done deal. Check out the excellent article The New York Times ran on the subject. If you have not already done so, please either write or call Governor Rendell, voicing your opinion about this issue and assuring him of your competency to read labels. |
