Lancaster Farm Fresh brought us the first SPRING CROP PARSNIPS (crisp and sweet!), BABY RED RUSSIAN KALE (tender and mild) and BABY ARUGULA on Tuesday, and will drop off some gorgeous RED RADISHES on Friday morning. SAVOY SPINACH from Rineer Family Farms is back on Saturday.
Looking for a bright taste to welcome the warmer weather? Paul Tzakos from Overbrook Herb Farm recommends making Sorrel Butter to melt over seared salmon or poultry. Just cut leaves into thin ribbons, fold into softened butter, form a roll with wax paper, and chill until use. SORREL can be found at the Farmstand starting Friday.
For years, Philadelphia chocolate lovers have been bemoaning the fact that John & Kira’s chocolate creations are so hard to get your hands on in the city where they are made. The wait is over! We are excited to announce that the Farmstand has acquired a precious case of the first boutique chocolate boxes that John & Kira have made available for wholesale. These beautifully packaged SALTED CARAMEL BEE BOXES contain exquisite, hand-painted chocolates filled with salted caramel that has been spiked with aromatic basswood honey. Fair Food staff member, Annie Rojas, claimed that the sample she tried was so delicious that it “made her knees wobble”. These nationally recognized confections have been featured in magazines such as Martha Stewart, Oprah and Gourmet and are mostly sold online. John & Kira use a variety of local ingredients for their unique ganache fillings, including herbs from Philadelphia urban school programs, berries from Green Meadow Farm, and (as in the Bee Boxes) honey from Draper Apiary. |

Landisdale Farm CSA Looking for new members
Our farm is located in Lebanon County. This marks the seventh year for our farm growing certified organic produce. We had our farm certified organic since 1998.
We enjoy the connection that we have with you as a consumer and are offering a CSA (community supported agriculture) from our farm again this growing season. As a share member you will receive a weekly assortment of veggies and small selection of low spray fruit.

Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative (LFFC) are buying seeds and preparing their greenhouses for the 2009 CSA season! Reserve your shares now.
Vegetable and fruit shares are on sale now. LFFC will deliver 25 weeks of locally-grown, freshly harvested and certified organic produce to pick-up sites throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. Fruit shares and a weekly pricelist of local farm products including: eggs, chicken, bison sausage, yogurt, raw milk, honey and maple sugar, are available with an LFFC CSA share (special orders not available at RTM and Rittenhouse Square pick-up sites). A full share is $700 and a half share is $375. A $25 discount will be given to individuals who purchase a full share before 3/1/2009 (discounts on full shares only). Curried Parsnip Soup with Parsnip Chips
Serves 6
1/4 cup (2 fl oz/60 ml) vegetable oil
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 small chili pepper, seeded and sliced
1-1/4 lb (625 g) parsnips, peeled and chopped
2 cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
4 cups (32 fl oz/1 L) vegetable stock
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) cream
For Parsnip Chips
4 parsnips, peeled
3 cups (24 fl oz/150 ml) vegetable oil, for deep-frying
Warm oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion softens, about 2 minutes. Stir in turmeric, cumin, ginger and chili pepper, and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add parsnips and apples and stir well. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in stock and season with salt and pepper. Bring mixture to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat, cover and simmer until parsnips are soft, 30-40 minutes.
To make parsnip chips: Thinly slice each parsnip lengthwise with a vegetable peeler. Heat oil in a large, deep, heavy-bottomed saucepan or deep-fat fryer until it reaches 375 degrees F. (190 degrees C.) on a deep-frying thermometer or until a small cube of bread dropped into oil sizzles and turns golden. Working in handfuls, add parsnip slices to hot oil and deep-fry until golden, about 1 minute. Using a slotted spoon, remove chips from oil and drain on paper towels.
Remove soup from heat and transfer to a large bowl. Working in batches, ladle into a food processor and process until smooth, about 20 seconds. Return soup to saucepan and heat through over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Stir in cream just before serving. Ladle into serving bowls and top with crisp parsnip chips.
