New This Week:
|
|
Expect a new delivery of superb artisan cheeses from Valley Shepherd
Creamery,
all made with a mix of raw cow and sheep's milk and cave-aged to
perfection. Back from a short gap in supply are favorites BABABLOO
(a potent blue, ripened up to 6 months), FAIRMOUNT (alpine-style,
aged 8-15 months), CALIFONE TOMME (creamy and golden, with a subtle
tang and incredible finish), and CARAMEAWAY (a rich gouda-inspired
cheese brimming with caraway seeds).
Decadent new flavors of chocolate sauce from Philly's
own Betty's Tasty Buttons will be arriving early in the week
(At right is the lovely Liz, Betty's
proprietress). Try Liz's bright spring creations: MI AMORE (Tart
Cherries & Amaretto), LAVENDER MINT, and BIG WHOOP (Dark Chocolate
& Malted Milk).
Not sold on the idea of raw milk, but still want
to drink milk from local grass-fed cows? Try the "CREAM-LINE"
PASTEURIZED MILK from Lancaster Farm Fresh in Quarryville,
PA. This milk is non-homogenized and comes from pastured cows that
were raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics.

How thirsty does this make you?

The
staff of Fair Food will be bustling this weekend to prepare for
our annual fundraiser, The Brewer's Plate. It's hard to describe
to the uninitiated just how fun and delicious (not to mention, intoxicating)
this event always manages to be. Imagine walking into a huge room
filled with people set on feeding you more than 21 gourmet dishes
and filling your cup with mind-blowing micro-brews. It's foodie
heaven.
Some highlights of this year's event:
* Sustainably-harvested oysters from Choptank
Oyster Company, an environmentally-sound oyster farm on
Maryland's Chesapeake Bay.
* Your first sip of Philadelphia Brewing Company's Row House
Red, inspired by a French farmhouse ale traditionally released in
spring.
* The debut of the new book He Said Beer, She Said Wine: Impassioned
Food Pairings to Debate and Enjoy by Marnie Old (respected sommelier)
and Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head brewmaster). Marnie will be doing
a tasting in the VIP room, as well as making herself available to
sign sparkling-new copies of the book (which isn't officially released
until March 17th!)
Buy tickets to The Brewers Plate at the Farmstand or online at www.thebrewersplate.org.
You might notice that several items are now listed under
the title Lancaster Farm Fresh, rather than by the individual farm
name. LFF has requested that all mentions of the individual names
of their affiliate farms be excluded from Internet communications,
in respect for the religious beliefs of many of their members. If
you have questions about any of these products or farms, check out
the labels at the stand or feel free to ask us when you come by.
This week is also the annual Flower Show at the Philadelphia Convention
Center, which means lively crowds in the Reading Terminal Market.
We hope you'll still come to shop, but we do suggest coming at non-peak
times-specifically avoiding the lunch crowd.

ROASTING OYSTER MUSHROOMS
Pre-heat oven to 375°.
Toss mushrooms with Olive Oil, Balsamic Vinegar, Minced Garlic,
Fresh Thyme, Basil or Marjoram, Salt and Pepper.
For an Asian spin substitute Sesame Oil and Shoyu for Olive
Oil and Salt.
Add just enough oil and vinegar to coat all of the mushrooms,
keeping in mind they will sweat while cooking.
Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake, tossing occasionally,
until golden and crispy.
Eat roasted mushrooms as they are or add them to your favorite
soup, sauce, or entrée.
Oyster Mushrooms are high in protein and contain
significant quantities of free amino acids. They are replete with
vitamins C and B, as well as niacin.
For more cooking tips and recipes consult www.epicurious.com
or ask your friendly Farmstand worker.
