Strawberry fields forever! Berries on their way from Buzby Farm to the 'Stand.

Fresh & New This Week:

In case you haven't already been bombarded by our excitement, STRAWBERRIES are in! Fresh from the fields of AT Buzby Farm in Woodstown, NJ, we have delicious strawberries, now bringing happiness to the faces, tummies, arms, hands and shirtsleeves of Philadelphians everywhere.

On Friday, Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op is sending us beautiful TROUTSBACK ROMAINE LETTUCE (yep, it looks like the spotted back of Trout!). They will also send a plethora of RADISH varieties, including FRENCH BREAKFAST, EASTER EGG, RED GLOBE and WHITE ICICLE.

Other good news is that Paradise Organics has replenished our supply of greens, making the 'Stand a forest of greenery as opposed to a lunar landscape of potatoes and onions.

Tuesday and Friday bring:
LACINATO KALE
CURLY KALE
RAINBOW CHARD
COLLARD GREENS
RED OAK LEAF LETTUCE
MUSTARD GREENS
ARUGULA
SPRING MIX
BABY SPINACH

Message from Emily Gunther, Product Manager

Strawberries are the sweetest part of spring but its even sweeter to know that they have been grown with care, just across the river in New Jersey.

AT Buzby Farm is owned and operated by Dawn Buzby and her husband Andy. They bought the farm when they got married in 1981; and while Andy's grandparents farmed, Dawn and Andy consider themselves first generation farmers.

The Buzbys grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables on their 130 acre farm, about half of which is preserved so that it can never be developed. Their farm practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods, which include using no-till, drip irrigation, composting and other environmentally responsible techniques.

For years, the Buzbys only sold wholesale and often sent their produce to far off reaches by way of the Vineland auction. However, about 9 years ago, they started selling at farmers markets and direct wholesale (selling directly to stores instead of at the auction). Their oldest son, Eric, returned to the farm in 2004 and is the second generation keeping the farm thriving. "I find it very rewarding to be at home, to work together with my family," said Dawn.

We are able to get produce at the Farmstand from Buzby Farm through Common Market, Philadelphia's all-local distributor. Many of the institutions that are involved with Fair Food's Farm to Institution program, including some of the District High Schools of Philadelphia, have also enjoyed the Buzby's produce over the past two years. While Common Market makes it possible for us to enjoy their tasty berries (and sweet corn in the summer!), it works well for the Buzbys too: "I'm just very excited about our product staying local," Dawn Buzby said. "It's fresher. They get the best quality."

Strawberry-Rhubarb Crumble
We couldn't resist this classic, from one of our favorite blogs: SmittenKitchen.com

Yields 6 to 8 servings.

For the topping:
1 1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons Demerara sugar (or turbinado sugar aka Sugar in the Raw)
Zest of one lemon
1/4 pound (1 stick or 4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted

For the filling:
1 1/2 cups rhubarb, chopped into 1-inch pieces
1 quart strawberries plus a few extras, hulled, quartered
Juice of one lemon
1/2 cup sugar 3 to 4 tablespoons cornstarch (some commenters found the flour option a little too, well, floury so this has been updated)
Pinch of salt

1. Heat oven to 375°F. Prepare topping: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugars and lemon zest and add the melted butter. Mix until small and large clumps form. Refrigerate until needed.

2. Prepare filling: Toss rhubarb, strawberries, lemon juice, sugar, cornstarch and a pinch of salt in a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. (I used an oval dish this time, because they fit better in the bottom of a shopping bag.)

3. Remove topping from refrigerator and cover fruit thickly and evenly with topping. Place pie plate on a (foil-lined, if you really want to think ahead) baking sheet, and bake until crumble topping is golden brown in places and fruit is bubbling beneath, about 40 to 50 minutes.
