Fresh & New This Week:

How about a cherry on top? We have some beautiful DARK RED SWEET CHERRIES from Kauffman's Fruit Farm, arriving tomorrow and GOLDEN CHERRIES from Green Meadow Farm arrived earlier today.

We continue to have a varying selection of GREEN and RED LEAF LETTUCES from Paradise Organics, Landisdale Farm, and Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op.

This week, we are pleasantly surprised with produce from Mill Creek Urban Farm, just over the bridge in West Philadelphia. Among other goodies, they brought BRAISING MIX of teenage/young adult mustard greens, CHINESE CABBAGE, GARLIC SCAPES and CILANTRO. Find out more about the great work they do at www.millcreekurbanfarm.org.

Tuesday, Paradise Organics brought some greenhouse RED TOMATOES and MIXED CHERRY and GRAPE TOMATOES, along with the biggest BASIL I've ever seen. We hope to get more on Friday morning so we're set for the weekend. All you need is some fresh mozzarella, olive oil, and smoked sea salt and you have a well rounded meal.

Stay tuned next week for... blueberries!

Fair Food & PUFFA: Partnering to Improve School Food for Healthier Kids!

The Philadelphia Urban Food and Fitness Alliance (PUFFA) is part of a national movement funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to shape how we feed our children and create safe places where they can be physically active. Over the past several years, Fair Food was integral to the planning process for PUFFA-- a process which identified key working areas, and brought together stakeholders from communities across the city. This planning process resulted in a plan designed to improve food systems and the built environment through advocacy, policy, and real systemic change.

Working closely with the Health Promotion Council, The Enterprise Center CDC in West Philly, and the SouthEast Philadelphia Collaborative in South Philly, community leaders, youth, and the School District of Philadelphia, Fair Food works with PUFFA in order to help guide the collaborative on how the partners can work together to improve school food, including work towards additional farm to school initiatives which put local food purchasing practices into place on the district level. The goals of PUFFA around school food are to develop systems and policy change to make fresher, healthier, and more locally-sourced foods a permanent addition to the lunchroom menu.

For more information on this city-wide collaboration and to find out how you can be involved, visit: www.puffaphilly.org.

Cherry and Chocolate Fried Pies
From the blog, Ezra Pound Cake; Adapted from Rebecca Rather’s “The Pastry Queen”. I want to eat these immediately.
Yield: 6 individual pies

Cherry and Chocolate Fillings
* 1/2 cup fresh cherries
* 1/8 cup cherry preserves
* 1/2 cup chocolate chips, melted and slightly cooled Dough
* 3 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 tablespoon salt
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
* 3/4 cup ice water
* Oil, for deep-frying Glaze
* 1/2 cup powdered sugar
* 1 tablespoon milk
* 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. To make the cherry filling: In a small bowl, combine the cherries with the preserves.
2. To make the dough: In a food processor, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the butter, and pulse until the mixture resembles cornmeal. Add the ice water while the processor is running, until the dough forms a ball. Divide the dough in half. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour on a flat board or surface. Roll out each portion of dough to 1-16th thickness, a little thicker than a tortilla. Cut the dough into 5-inch circles; each ball should make three rounds. Put 1 tablespoon of 1 filling flavor (either cherry or chocolate) in the center of each dough round. Fold the dough rounds in half; wet your fingers and press to seal the edges with water. Crimp the edges with the tines of a fork.
3. To fry the pies: Pour about 3 inches of oil into a deep-frying pan or Dutch oven, and set it over medium-high heat. The oil is hot enough when a scrap of dough dropped in the pan sizzles and bubbles, about 350 degrees F. (The temperature of the oil will fluctuate during the frying process, so you might want to use a thermometer.) Fry the pies, a few at a time, until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Drain the pies on plates lined with paper towels.
4. Glaze: Whisk the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Using a pastry brush, glaze the warm pies. Serve immediately. Baking Option: If you’d rather bake the pies, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Brush the top of each pie with egg wash (1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water), and bake them on a parchment-lined baking sheet for about 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
