Blueberries
Summer has officially arrived, and with it has come the fruit! On Wednesday, we will get three different types of CHERRIES - PIE CHERRIES, DARK RED CHERRIES, and WHITE/PINK Cherries all from Green Meadow Farm. Wednesday also brings more BLUEBERRIES from Common Market, with a second round of BLUEBERRIES from Paradise Hill Farm.

Summery vegetables are also filling up the 'Stand - GREEN BEANS from Green Meadow Farm and FRESH RED POTATOES from Rineer Farmily Farms have already arrived and would be great in summer salads. On Thursday, we will get FAVA BEANS and the first FRESH GARLIC of the summer from Overbrook Herb Farm. This FRESH GARLIC is a bit milder than dried garlic but can satisfy our cravings for this healthy allium for the next few weeks.

Impress your friends and family with a gourmet salad with ENDIVE from Common Market and top it with the delicate PEA TENDRILS from Tuscarora Organic Growers.

And in case you are tired of fresh, local produce, try Cherry Grove Farm's GOUDA, which will arrive on Thursday. This raw cow's milk cheese is aged 2 months and is sure to delight cheese lovers across Philadelphia!

We are excited to announce that we have just broken ground on our new space on the 12th Street side of the Reading Terminal Market! The demolition and construction of the new Farmstand should take 4 to 5 weeks. Expanding to this larger retail space within will give us the ability to offer even more locally grown products, with a broader price point. We will also have more freezer and refrigerator space for your favorite products. Additionally, we will increase the selection of value added and locally produced items to support the growing number of food businesses in Philadelphia.

The Farmstand has seen tremendous growth in the past several years. As many of you know, the Farmstand started as a one-day-a-week vendor in the Center Court of Reading Terminal Market. At that time, the Farmstand was a folding table and a chest freezer, and our primary goal was to educate consumers about the bounty and diversity of local agriculture, and the secondary goal was to provide access to local humanely-raised animal products (hence the freezer). Eventually, consumer demand warranted a second day, and the Farmstand began building a base of support with Saturday shoppers. Since then, the Fair Food Farmstand has grown into its current 6 day/week year-round business.

Fair Food is working with ReVision Architecture to design the new location. For the signage, marketing and educational materials, local design firm, Design for Social Impact will help us. We'll be sure to keep you updated, and don't hesitate to peek through the plastic curtains to see the progress.

Join us on a tour of Hendricks Farms and Dairy, and learn about their production of raw milk, meats, and award-winning cheeses. We will enjoy a tour of the family's beautiful farm and cheese houses. You will learn about raising the grass-fed Ayrshire and Angus cattle that produce their products, the use of draft horses to power the farm, and the production of their cheeses. Our day will conclude with a picnic lunch featuring locally-produced food, including Hendricks delicious cheeses.

Lemon-Blueberry Yogurt Loaf
Adapted from Ina Garten

1 1/2 cups + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
3 extra-large eggs
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest (approximately 2 lemons)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups blueberries
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8 1/2 by 4 1/4 by 2 1/2-inch loaf pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper. Grease and flour the pan.

Sift together 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt into 1 bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the yogurt, 1 cup sugar, the eggs, lemon zest, vanilla and oil. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix the blueberries with the remaining tablespoon of flour, and fold them very gently into the batter. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 50 (+) minutes, or until a cake tester placed in the center of the loaf comes out clean.

Meanwhile, cook the 1/3 cup lemon juice and remaining 1 tablespoon sugar in a small pan until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is clear. Set aside.

When the cake is done, allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before flipping out onto a cooling rack. Carefully place on a baking rack over a sheet pan. While the cake is still warm, pour the lemon-sugar mixture over the cake and allow it to soak in (a pastry brush works great for this, as does using a toothpick to make tiny holes that draw the syrup in better). Cool.
