SVF Foundation in Newport, RI. See this week's message for an overview on our visit there!

Fresh & New This Week:

BLUEBERRIES have finally arrived! All this hot weather has has our favorite berries bursting; from Paradise Hill Farm and Stoney Creek Farms. Some sad news: Paradise Hill (our long time supplier of those tasty blues, as well as cranberries) lost much of their blueberry crop to several nights of frost last week. To keep us stocked, the Paradise Hill crew will be harvesting berries from another farm further south.

FAVA BEANS and GREEN BEANS came from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op along with some CHEDDAR CAULIFLOWER on Tuesday morning. This pretty Cheddar colored 'flower doesn't taste like America's favorite cheese but its color elicits "Oohs and Ahhs" wherever it goes.

Today, Green Meadow Farm brought some SWEET CORN, surely the official sign of summer. More SWEET WHITE CORN is coming on Friday morning from AT Buzby Farm and we hope to have a consistent supply from here out.

Friday will bring HEIRLOOM TOMATOES, ASIAN CUCUMBERS, GOLD BEETS and ROYAL BURGUNDY BEANS from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op, to set off the weekend with a bang (Gazpacho anyone?). Paradise Organics is hookng us up with more green BROCCOLI on Friday as well.

Please note: There is NO Slow Rise Bakery bread this week or next, they are on vacation! They will be back to the usual schedule starting Tuesday, July 6th.

Message from Leticia Garcia, Program Associate

Two weekends ago, a few adventurous Fair Food Staff members packed their bags and hit the road for the SVF Foundation in Newport, RI. SVF is a foundation with a mission to preserve germplasm (embryos, semen and genetic material) of rare and endangered breeds of livestock. They have collaborated with Fair Food to fund and promote our upcoming heritage breed education program. A few of our staff members were lucky enough to man a Fair Food table at the SVF June Open House, during which the facilities are open to the general public for an educational visit. The invitation was further extended to an overnight stay, but not before being wined and dined at their 35 acre “farm” with renovated animal facilities, biology laboratories and beautiful Swiss style cottages.

What is so unique about this so-called “farm” that it crazy birdwarrants being stuck between quotation marks, you might ask? Swiss Villa Farm was more specifically described as being “somewhere between a farm and the CIA” by a friend. You see, SVF turned out to be an amazing Swiss fairy tale full of ancient architecture, perfectly trimmed rolling hills, rare heritage breed livestock and technologically advanced laboratories for embryonic collection. Not only does SVF raise heritage breed livestock, they also genetically preserve their embyos through cytopreservation, a process where cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling to low-zero temperatures. This farm deviated from anything and everything my common sense told me about a farm. Mahogany gates, laboratories and liquid nitrogen demonstrations were not exactly what I expected for a run-of-the-mill farm stay.

Our trip to Swiss Villa expanded my perceptions about organizations that support sustainable agriculture and the people behind them. My preconceptions about the people who support sustainable agriculture was limited to my lived experience. So, while small family farmers, loyal Philadelphia foodies and organizations like Fair Food play an important role in creating more sustainable food systems and preserving farmland, so do technologically advanced foundations, like SVF.

For more information on Swiss Villa Farm Foundation, please visit: http://www.svffoundation.org or read the article about them from the NY Times here (published last January).

Gazpacho
I lived in Spain as a college student where I developed a strong affinity for garlicy gazpacho, jamon serrano and the best olive oil I've ever tasted. Enjoy this simple recipe and imagine you're sitting at a cafe in the Spanish heat (much like our own right now!).

2 pounds tomatoes, cut into chunks (heirloom, mixed red and yellow, use any combination!)
1/2 pound rustic bread, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 4 cups)
1 cucumber
1 pepper (green or red)
1 red onion, chopped
1/4 cup Sherry wine vinegar
1/4 cup good olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
salt to taste

Combine the ingredients in a food processor and blend. Strain out any seeds and refrigerate the soup for a few hours, up to 2 days.

Serve with any array of garnishes (chopped tomatoes, bread, olive oil, the works!)
