Heirloom tomatoes
|
Fresh & New This Week: |
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Farmstand will be CLOSED on Sunday, July 4th and Monday, July 5th in observance of Independence Day. We'll be back and running on Tuesday July 6th.
WHITE and YELLOW PEACHES are in! From Beechwood Orchards, these clingstone peaches are the first of the summer and just in time for the 4th of July weekend! And what is the 4th of July without CORN! The Buzby's have us stocked with SWEET WHITE CORN for the weekend, and we've all been talking about this sweet, tender treat. Yes, produce can be a treat.
In addition to the classic favorites, we're pretty stoked to be carrying some fun heirloom varieties of the usual suspects (all from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op):
ROYAL BURGANDY BEANS
ROMANESCO CAULIFLOWER
LEMON CUCUMBERS (Friday) - A little sweeter than regular 'cukes (not lemony at all, but look like lemons!)
MIXED SPECIALTY EGGPLANT
and MIXED SUMMER SQUASH from Beechwood Orchards
Sure, we also have MIXED HEIRLOOM TOMATOES, but let's not reserve heirloom status just to tomatoes.
Finally, Slow Rise Bakery bread will resume on Tuesday, July 6th! Also, Dutch Meadows milk will be back on the shelves on Friday! |

Summer Update!
Aside from all of the natural changes that Spring elicits, this year brought many changes in staffing at the Farmstand. We were sad to lose not only our Manager, Sarah Cain, but also three amazing, knowledgable and dedicated staffers - Emma Morrow, Landon Jeffries and Genevieve Lodal. While we are very sad that they have left us, we couldnt be more happy with what they are doing - FARMING!
Emma and Genevieve are both working at North Star Orchard in Chester County. Emma is managing the vegetable garden and Genevieve is a seasonal farm worker at North Star, which grows "70+ varieties of modern and heritage apples, seven types of Asian pears, 50+ kinds of plums, and 30+ kinds of peaches, as well as European pears, nectarines, and a wide assortment of vegetables."
Here is just a taste of the work Emma and Genevieve accomplished this spring:
- transplanting tomatoes, tomatillos, basil, peppers, lettuce, peanuts, parsley, mustard greens and potatoes from seed (seed saved by Ike, North Star owner, from last year's crop)
- seeding crops in the greenhouse and in the field
- planting our new perennial herb garden
- thinning carrots, beets and radishes
- hoeing and handweeding everything!
- setting up drip irrigation to everything, and constantly fooling around with it and fixing leaks!
- putting row cover (metal hoops and spun polyester cloth) over anything that flea beetles or cucumber beetles like to chow down on
- tying down branches on baby Asian pear trees
- thinning Asian pears and peaches.
Since leaving Fair Food, Landon has continued his work as the Farm Manager at Wyck House in Germantown. Landon has been the Farm Manager there for the past 2 years where he runs the farm and farmers' market, along with hosting agricultural workshops. He also selected the farm's first flock of chickens this year, which I'm told are silly group of gals.
In his 'free time', Landon is also working on his own farm, Root Mass Farm! He and his girlfriend, Lindsey, are starting their own farm in Oley, PA a nd are spending this summer fixing up their apartment on the farm and preparing the land for cultivation (this involves several rotations of different cover crops and more). They will have the farm under production next summer and we've already put in our requests for favorite vegetables. Landon is a garlic expert, so we already asked him to plant a lot for us!
We never wanted Emma, Genevieve and Landon to leave, but we are thrilled to know three fabulous young farmers. Check out: North Star Orchard and Root Mass Farm online to stay updated! Oh, did we mention that Landon and Emma are now FFF volunteers? |

Fair Food Board Seeks Like-Minded Individuals
Join our effort and become part of our team as a board member, advisory committee member or general support.
Do you have an interest in supporting local farmers and bringing local food to individuals and institutions?
The Fair Food FarmStand sells all-local products from over 90 family farmers and producers including produce, meat, cheese, dairy, eggs and value-added goods. We are open year-round, 7 days/week and we accept SNAP, as well as participate in a pilot program to increase the value of SNAP/food stamps at our stand.
Fair Food is also a national leader in the movement to rebuild Local Food Systems. We have connected local farmers with institutions such as our pilot program bringing farm fresh produce to 20 Philadelphia Public Schools. In addition, our public awareness and education campaigns promote the value of local food by highlighting importance of preserving farmland, preserving biodiversity, and strengthening the local economy.
You can be a part of this work that fosters a thriving network of food service businesses, institutions, consumers and family farmers, expanding opportunities for local producers in the wholesale marketplace in our region.
The Fair Food Board is now accepting nominations for positions on our Board of Directors, advisory committees and other general support.

Blueberry Peach Cobbler
My favorite summer staple. Yes, I would eat this 3 meals a day if it didn't involve the oven being turned on during the summer. This recipe is adapted from a recipe from local favorite, Terhune Orchards.
1 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
3 medium peaches, peeled, sliced, lightly sugared
1 pint blueberries
Vanilla ice cream, optional
Combine dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Combine milk and butter. Pour over dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. Pour into a greased 12 x 8 x 2 - inch glass baking dish. Spread peaches evenly over top of batter. Sprinkle with blueberries. Bake at 350 F for 50 minutes or until batter rises through the fruit and top is golden brown. Serve cobbler warm, topped with vanilla ice cream. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
