At the Farmstand, we pride ourselves on having close relationships with all of our suppliers. Now that we buy from over 65 growers and producers, it's hard to keep up! This month I was the lucky one who got to visit three farms that sell to the Farmstand. Natural Acres Farm, located in Millersburg, PA, is where we get all of our Organic grass-fed beef and Organic eggs for the Farmstand. It was great to see the cows and chickens out on pasture, but the most striking thing about Natural Acres is their constant innovation. Last year, owner Ivan Martin built a state of the art composting system on the farm to build up his soil. This year, he is developing a system to process the waste from his next door neighbor's onion factory - he's extracting the juice from the onion skins to make a compost tea rich in beneficial microbes to spray on his fields. Swiss Villa Dairy, where we get our grass-based raw milk (in glass bottles) is just 4 miles up the road from Natural Acres. As we drove up to Swiss Villa, we passed by the Swiss cows on pasture. Farmer Steven Fisher graciously gave us a tour of his milk processing and bottling facility, which was both state of the art and clean as a whistle. Steve was also very articulate about his commitment to raw milk as the healthiest and safest product available to consumers. Last week I toured Griggstown Quail Farm with farmer George Rude and chef Matthew Systema. Located in Princeton, NJ on 75-acres, Griggstown Quail Farm raises ducks, turkeys and pheasants on pasture, and the chickens and quail are free-range. All the animals are processed on the farm in their USDA-inspected facility. Equally impressive is their value-added operation. They make everything from scratch including stock, soup, quiche, fruit pies, and a gizzilion potpies. Griggstown sells primarily to restaurants and stores in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey. However, this year they started selling at farmers markets, including 2 in Philadelphia - Clark Park (Saturdays) and Headhouse Square (Sundays). The Farmstand is carrying Griggstown's AMAZING potpies, and hope to carry more of their products once we find the space in our freezer! In honor of our trip to Meadow Run Farm on October 6th, the Farmstand is offering a 25% OFF SPECIAL on BONE-IN and BONELESS MEADOW RUN LAMB LEGS beginning this week through the month of October. Enjoy the first cool weather by roasting a leg of lamb with local garlic, and rest assured that you're supporting sustainable agriculture and your local family farmers. |

Tour to Meadow Run Farm: Take a look around Philip and Dorcas Horst Landis's sustainability-focused farm. Visit their pasture-raised turkeys and chickens, grass-fed cows and lambs, and pastured pigs and learn about the benefits of a grass-based diet to animal health and happiness. As a special treat, our picnic lunch will include grilled burgers from their cows! Tickets are $25 adults, $12 children (6-13) free for children under 6. Price includes tour and deliciously fresh and local picnic on the farm. Farmers Market Nutrition Program (Senior an WIC) participants receive a 50% discount.
