Staff Farm Tour 2010!
Fresh & New This Week:

10% off all Produce, 30% off all Raw Milk, all day, every Monday!!

The Farmstand is overflowing with fruit! Peaches and Plums and Apricots (Oh My!).  Taste the difference between varieties:  we have WHITE and YELLOW PEACHES, DONUT PEACHES, WHITE and YELLOW NECTARINES, FORMOSA and SHIRO PLUMS, and HARGRAND and GOLDCOT APRICOTS (all from Beechwood Orchards).  They’re good for eating, baking, and even canning! Nothing says “summer” like berries!  This weekend, we’ll be getting golden, delicious GROUND CHERRIES from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-Op.   We also have huge, juicy BLACKBERRIES and RED RASPBERRIES from Green Meadow Farm.

We also have tons of peppers, including POBLANO, ITALIAN, SWEET ARUBA, and JALAPENO PEPPERS.  On Friday, we’ll also have SWEET RED BELL PEPPERS and spicy HANABERO PEPPERS for your summer salads and grills.

Check out Keswick Creamery's CHEESE CSA! Visit their website for info on how you can help save their farm! This is a great way to enjoy their delicious cheeses and make a positive investment in the farm.

Big News from Farm to Institution

The Philadelphia Farm to School movement will be in full force this fall thanks to funding from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and the PA Department of Agriculture. Led by Fair Food, and in partnership with The Food Trust, the Health Promotion Council, and the School District of Philadelphia, 23 Philly schools will begin to purchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables for use in their daily meals. This program will help support the region's farmers, increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables among school-aged youth, to spread positive nutritional messaging about these foods, and to continue to make Philadelphia a leader in sustainable food systems.

Do you have an interest in supporting local farmers and bringing local food to individuals and institutions?

The Fair Food FarmStand sells all-local products from over 90 family farmers and producers including produce, meat, cheese, dairy, eggs and value-added goods. We are open year-round, 7 days/week and we accept SNAP, as well as participate in a pilot program to increase the value of SNAP/food stamps at our stand.

Fair Food is also a national leader in the movement to rebuild Local Food Systems. We have connected local farmers with institutions such as our pilot program bringing farm fresh produce to 20 Philadelphia Public Schools. In addition, our public awareness and education campaigns promote the value of local food by highlighting importance of preserving farmland, preserving biodiversity, and strengthening the local economy.

Pickled Apricots
An unusual and delicious alternative to apricot jam, pickled apricots are delicious served over ice cream, on top of a cracker smeared with goat cheese, or as a nice addition to roasted meats.  Try using goldcot apricots – they’re perfect for canning!

[yields 4 pints]

2 cups white wine vinegar
2 cups white wine
2 cups sugar
shredded zest of 1 orange
3 tablespoons shredded crystallized ginger
4 pounds apricots, halved and pitted

In a non-reactive pot, bring to a boil all of the ingredients, except the apricots.  Add the apricots and cook them briefly, until they are heated through and barely tender.

Divide the apricots and their liquid among hot, sterilized pint mason jars, leaving ½ inch headspace.  Close the jars with two-piece lids and set the jars on a rack or dishtowel to cool undisturbed.

When the jars have cooled completely, check to make sure the lids have sealed.  Store the jars in a dark cool place until ready to eat.  If the lids have not sealed, refrigerate.
